Legendary Holsteiner Sire Le Santo Euthanized

At the age of 25, the legendary Holsteiner sire Le Santo (Landgraf I x Metro, by Wildfeuer) was euthanized on Sunday, August 3, 2008, from complications from an injury the week before. Le Santo was very well known for being one the highest bonited stallions in the United States, as well as being a leading sire for more than two decades.

Le Santo was injured while being collected on July 30, 2008. With recommendations from several veterinarians and sports medicine specialists, his owners at Irish Hills Farm made the decision to have him euthanized after he was showing no signs of being able to make a recovery.

Rare Przewalski Horses Born at San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park

Three Przewalski horse foals kicked up their hooves, making a grand entrance at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park on Friday, August 8, 2008.

The Wild Animal Park currently houses 17 of these critically endangered horses, including the new additions, born August 3, July 22 and July 19. Two more babies are expected soon. Foals are born after an 11-month pregnancy. Approximately 30 minutes after birth the babies must be on their legs and able to move with the herd.

Since 1974, 138 Przewalski's horses have been born at the Park. The first pair arrived in 1970, leading the way to a successful breeding program that has allowed the Park to participate in a reintroduction program in Kazakstan. The Przewalski horse is an endangered species that at one time became extinct in the wild, but with reproduction and reintroduction programs, zoos and other conservation organizations have maintained this species.

News from the Kentucky State Fair World's Championship Horse Show

With over a quarter-million dollars in total prize money on the line in the American Saddlebred Registry futurities offered at the Kentucky State Fair this year, the World's Championship Horse Show began with its traditional Sunday night opener, the weanling section of the Kentucky Futurity.

In what proved to be an omen for a spectacular evening for the prolific, high-profile sire Undulata's Nutcracker, owned by Schones & Jampsa, LLC, the lovely weanling colt I'm In Heaven won the first rich blue offered this year; he was handled by Joan Lurie and Darrell Case. This was a familiar scene for these connections, since his dam, Heavenly Thunder, was twice World's Champion in 2007, in the three-gaited section. I'm In Heaven is owned by his breeders, McGlothlin Heir Svc and Willowbank.

Nokota Horses to Compete at Dressage at Devon for First Time

Descendents of wild horses, the breed now known as the Nokota was developed in the West for its versatility. But if these colorful horses are known for their take-it-all toughness, they aren’t afraid to show off their more graceful side as well. This year, Nokotas will be showing in the prestigious Dressage at Devon Horse Show. Dressage showcases the agility and grace, the suppleness and strength of highly trained and conditioned sport horses. The first-ever Nokota Individual Breed Class will take place on Wednesday, September 25, at the Dressage at Devon horse show. The event coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Nokota Horse Conservancy, which maintains the Nokota Breed Registry.

Simple, But Critical, Management Practices Are Necessary for Optimal Herd Health

Managing one horse can be challenging enough, but when there is a whole barn full of horses—each with its own individual needs—keeping schedules straight and preventing disease outbreaks can become a daunting task. Whether it’s a breeding facility, a bustling show barn, or simply a pasture full of backyard companions, horse owners and managers have a responsibility to stay current on the necessary management practices to keep their herd healthy.
